June 7 VCR Day

June 7 VCR Day

VCR Day is observed every year on June 7. VCR day is dedicated to the humble video, and celebrates the simple elegance of analogue recording and playback. Many young people do not know what a VCR player or a VCR tape is.

The video cassette recorder is an electro-mechanical device that records analog audio and analog video from television on a removable, magnetic tape videocassette.

The first video cassette recorder was introduced in 1956. The home video cassette format (VCR) was developed in 1970. The birth of VCR mass market success boomed in the mid-1970s and continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Over 10 billion videotapes remain today with our recorded memories. These memories are keepsakes and people keep the tapes for that reason. It is important to move those memories to a more stable format to preserve them. Companies like Zoovio, Inc., provide options for both getting them converted to a DVD or stored in an online private vault online to be viewed and shared on internet connected devices including TVs.

June 6 Eyewear Day

June 6 Eyewear Day

On June 6 Eyewear Day is observed by many peoples. To remember is that sunglasses also help protect your eyes from harmful UV light. Eyewear today not only improves our vision, but it also protects it while adding elements of style and personality. Clearly eyewear plays a significant role in our lives.

The history of sunglasses stretches as far back as 14th century China, Spectacles have been around for about seven centuries, but early versions were only worn by monks and scholars. It wasn’t until the invention of the printing press in 1452 and an increase in literacy that the demand for eyewear grew as well.

UV radiation is often recognized as the culprit for sunburns and skin cancer but most people are oblivious to the damaging impact the wavelengths inflict on our vision. The problem originates with the sun’s unfiltered ultraviolet (UV) rays. Just as these rays can burn skin cells, they can also harm unprotected eyes. A full day outside without protection can cause immediate, temporary issues such as swollen or red eyes and hypersensitivity to light.

It is important to wear sunglasses or other UV-protective eyewear every day to protect long-term eye health.

June 4 Cheese Day

June 4 Cheese Day

Today is June 4 Cheese Lover’s Day. There is no solid evidence on how cheese making was discovered. The earliest record of cheese making dates back to 5,500 BCE in what is now Poland. Today there are over 1,400 varieties of cheese.

The average American consumes nearly about 31 pounds of cheese each year that may seem like a lot but for the average French person it’s 50 pounds.

Bacteria, enzymes or fungi may be added at various stages. These along with the type of milk, temperature, time and moisture are all controlled to produce the desired taste, color and texture. Herbs and spices may also be added.

There are more than 900 known cheeses in the world, and they can all be classified by texture. Here are the primary classifications and some examples: fresh cheese (ricotta); soft cheese (feta); semi-soft cheese (Fontina); semi-hard cheese (Gouda); hard cheese (Cheddar); double or triple crème cheese (Brillat-Savarin); blue cheese (Gorgonzola); washed rind cheese (Limburger); and bloomy rind cheese (Brie).

June 4 Old Maids Day

June 4 Old Maids Day

Every year on June 4, Old Maid's Day is observed on June 04. “Old Maid” refers to an older, childless woman who has never been married. A "spinster" is not simply a "single" woman, but a woman who has not formed a human pair bond by the time she is approaching or has reached menopause and the end of her reproductive lifespan.

Now-a-days, being a single, unmarried, and woman is not looked upon as a “bad thing”. Some women choose to focus on careers and their lives, postponing marriage and child bearing until later in life and some choose to always remain single, independent and self-sufficient. However, years ago being unmarried and childless was very much frowned upon and these women were referred to as “old maids” or “spinsters”, which was a degrading term.

Old Maid's Day brings awareness to those of us who have not yet found their Prince Charming. An old maid, or spinster, is an older, childless woman who has never been married.

June 3 Repeat Day

June 3 Repeat Day

Repeat Day is a quirky holiday celebrated every year on June 3, it is an opportunity to do things over and over again. Hopefully you will choose to repeat things you enjoy doing. As a matter of fact, it's perfectly okay to repeat them over and over again today.

Take this opportunity to repeat things you enjoy, such as watching your favorite movie twice or going in for that second piece of cake. It could even be as simple as giving your kids two hugs before they go to bed instead of just one.

Another way to celebrate is by repeating some of the simple tasks of the day. Wash the dishes twice. Make the same meal for lunch as you do for supper. Watch the same movie twice. The 1993 film Groundhog Day comes to mind. Send duplicate text messages.

Have a great day! Have a great day! Giving you an excuse to do things over and over again.

June 3 Doughnut Day – First Friday in June

June 3 Doughnut Day – First Friday in June

Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in Doughnut or Donut Day. In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during World War 1.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.” A more standard spelling is donut.

The Salvation Army is a charitable Christian organization that works to help the poor and the hungry. It was founded in London in 1865.

The two most common types are the steroidal ring doughnut and the filled doughnut, a flattened sphere injected with fruit preserves, cream, custard, or other sweet fillings. A small spherical piece of dough may be cooked as a doughnut hole. Doughnut varieties are also divided into cake and risen type doughnuts.

Just a few hours of your time, or a donation towards their organization will ensure they continue to be able to do their good work the world round.
