August 24 Waffle Day is observed each year. The unofficial holiday commemorates the day in 1869 when the first waffle iron was patented.
Waffle is a leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. Waffles come in many forms. Depending on the type of batter or iron used, the resulting waffle vary by consistency, size, shape and flavor.
1953 – Frank Dorsa’s Eggo Frozen Waffles are sold in Supermarkets for the first time.
1964 – Belgian Waffles debut at New York’s World’s Fair.
