August 6 Disc Golf Day– First Saturday in August, Requiring less equipment than traditional golf, disc golf shares the common goal of reaching each target with the fewest number of strokes, or to put it more accurately, throws.
In August of 2015, the International Olympic Committee granted full recognition to Flying Disc sports providing a global platform for Flying Disc sports, including disc golf.

People of all ages and abilities play disc golf. A great low-impact, cardiovascular workout that can test both physical skill and mental determination, this activity brings the whole family together for an afternoon of laughs and enjoyment together.
Disc golf parallels the traditional game in many ways. Instead of clubs and a ball, the only gear necessary is a disc or Frisbee. Starting from a tee pad, which is generally a rectangular area made of anything from rubber to cement or even brick, the player progresses down the fairway after each throw.

August 6 Jamaican Patty Day – First Saturday in August

August 6 Jamaican Patty Day – First Saturday in August

August 6 Jamaican Patty Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in August.
The patty has become a staple among Jamaicans, acting as a quick “grab-n-go” or “meal-on-the-run” type of snack. A typical person eats a patty or two for lunch while in school or at work. It serves well as a hot & nutritious snack and when paired with a coco-bread it becomes a belly-filling & satisfying meal in itself.

In 1989, Lowell, President and CEO along with his wife Lorna, four of his siblings and their spouses, pooled all their resources to open the first Golden Krust retail location on East Gun Hill Road in Bronx, NY. By 1996 they owned 17 Restaurants throughout New York City. The business became so successful that the Hawthorne’s were encouraged to create franchises and they seized the opportunity to do just that, “Jamaican Patty”.
Jamaica celebrates both Emancipation and Independence holidays in the month of August. Most importantly, Mavis Ephraim, the matriarch of the Hawthorne family was born in the month of August.

August 5 Underwear Day

August 5 Underwear Day

August 5 Underwear Day is observed annually.
Underwear are clothes worn under other clothes, often next to the skin. They keep outer clothes from being made dirty by sweat. They also shape the body and provide support for parts of it, and in cold weather help the wearer to keep warm.

Underwear can be used to protect the wearer’s modesty, as well as to make them look sexy. Special types of underwear have religious importance. Some items of clothing are made to be worn as underwear, while others such as T-shirts and certain types of shorts can be used both as underwear and as outer clothing.

August 5 Oyster Day

August 5 Oyster Day

Oyster Day is observed annually on August 5th. Oysters are enjoyed as seafood in many parts of the world. There are over 100 different species of oysters. They’re typically named after the body of water in which they’re grown because they take on the characteristics of the water they live in.

The largest oyster-producing body of water in the world is located in Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the U.S. Some species of oysters are commonly eaten, either cooked or raw, as a delicacy. While other types of oyster, such as pearl oysters, are not normally consumed by humans, they are harvested for their pearls.
Archeologists tell us humans have been eating oysters since the dawn of humanity. Oyster farming and cultivation can be traced back to Roman times in France and England.

August 4 Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

August 4 Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is celebrated annually on August 4. Chocolate chips are an essential ingredient in dozens of delicious baked goods—chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip pancakes, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate chip bagels, and many more.

In the 1930s, Ruth Graves Wakefield created the original chocolate chip cookie at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth intended to bake chocolate cookies for her guests, but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She substituted with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate morsels and discovered that the pieces did not melt into the dough as she expected. Her cookies were an instant hit. Today, 25% of all the cookies baked in the United States are chocolate chip

August 2 Ice Cream Sandwich Day

August 2 Ice Cream Sandwich Day

Celebrated each year on August 2, it’s Ice Cream Sandwich Day. The modern version of the ice cream sandwich was invented by Jerry Newberg in 1945 when he was selling ice cream at Forbes Field. Ice cream sandwiches come in many varieties. In their traditional form, vanilla ice cream is tucked between two thin layers that resemble chocolate cake.
Sandwiches are called “Giant Sandwiches," while "Maxibons" are half-dipped in chocolate.

Experiment with different kinds of ice cream flavors and outside layers of the sandwich. What about making a chipwich, it is an ice cream sandwich made of ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies.
Many countries around the world have their own version of the ice cream sandwich. In Iran for example, rose or pistachio flavored ice cream is sandwiched between two thin wafers, while in Vietnam, street vendors sell ice cream stuffed between two layers of bread.
Make your own ice cream sandwiches and share with your family and friends. All you need is some wafers, cookies or biscuits and some ice cream. Enjoy an ice cream sandwich today.
