February 2 Lung Leavin' Day

February 2 Lung Leavin' Day

LLD 0001

Lung Leavin’ Day is an unofficial day created by the Von St. James family 10 years ago on the eve of Heather Von St. James extrapleural pneumonectomy, or lung removal and chemo wash surgery to treat her mesothelioma cancer. Heather managed the fear and anxiety that came with her life changing cancer diagnosis and highly invasive surgery with humor and laughter. The Von St. James family wanted to celebrate Heather’s life-saving surgery in a special way, thus Lung Leavin’ Day came about. Taking from the tradition of fire walking where you write a fear on a plank of wood and walk across it in the fire, Heather and Cameron invite friends and family to write their fears on a plate, and smash the plate into a bonfire. Each year the celebration has grown, and the day now serves as a way to spread awareness and raise funds for mesothelioma. You can participate online by virtually smashing a plate or sharing to spread awareness!

February 2 Sled Dog Day

February 2 Sled Dog Day

SD 0001

Winter packed a punch last week. Most of the country hunkered down, taking shelter from the Arctic temperatures, but for dog sledding, the season has only just begun.

Sled dogs today are still used by some rural communities, especially in areas of Alaska and Canada and throughout Greenland.

Sled dogs are also celebrated for their role in polar expeditions, and a number of famous dog races are organized each year. Sled Dog Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the animals’ dedication to the human race. It can also be a time to raise money for dog charities taking care of homeless, or sick dogs, and those that have been cruelly abandoned by their owners.

Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2.

Many Canadians take the time to observe Groundhog Day on February 2 each year, which is also Candlemas. Groundhog Day in Canada focuses on the concept of a groundhog coming out of its home in mid-winter to “predict” if spring is on its way in the northern hemisphere.

The groundhog, also known as the woodchuck or marmot, is believed to make weather predictions relating to winter and spring according to superstition. Canada’s groundhog Wiarton Willie was popular enough to have its own statue in Wiarton, Ontario.
