July 23 Vanilla Ice Cream Day

Vanilla Ice Cream Day is observed annually on July 23rd. In North America and Europe the most common use of vanilla flavoring is for ice cream, and many people consider it to be the "default" or "plain" flavor. Sales in ice cream parlors are more variable, as new flavors come and go, but about three times as many people call vanilla their favorite compared to chocolate, the runner-up.

There are different types of ice cream according to the flavoring used. Regular vanilla ice cream is flavored by natural vanilla extract. If the ice cream is flavored with vanillin from natural vanilla, it is referred to as vanilla flavored ice cream. If the ice cream is flavored with artificial vanillin, it is called artificially flavored vanilla ice cream.

Jefferson produced a handwritten copy of a vanilla ice cream recipe in the 1780′s, which is now housed at the Library of Congress. The Thomas Jefferson ice cream is available at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.

July 23 Day of the Cowboy

Day of the Cowboy – Fourth Saturday in July – currently being researched, Day Of The Cowboy is observed annually on the fourth Saturday in July. Day of the Cowboy was organized by the NDOC organization with it’s first celebration in 2005. The organization is working diligently on making this day “official”.

The former President Bush, “We celebrate the Cowboy as a symbol of the grand history of the American West. The Cowboy’s love of the land and love of the country are examples for all Americans.”

To celebrate you can dress like a cowboy, host a hoedown, attend a rodeo, go horseback riding, or curl up on the couch to watch your favorite Westerns.

July 22 Penuche Fudge Day

July 22 Penuche Fudge Day is celebrated annually. Penuche is a type of fudge made with butter, milk, and brown sugar and flavored with vanilla.

Penuche is popular mainly in New England and some places in the American South; though in the latter it is usually referred to as brown sugar fudge candy.

Penuche (Italian: panucci) is a fudge-like candy made from brown sugar, butter, and milk, using no flavorings except for vanilla. Penuche often has a tannish color, and is lighter than regular fudge. It is formed by the caramelization of brown sugar; thus, its flavor is said to be reminiscent of caramel. Nuts, especially pecans, are often added to penuche for texture, especially in the making of penuche candies. It is primarily a regional food, found in New England and some places in the Southern United States.

Penuche fudge is usually prepared in the following way. The mixture of brown sugar, butter, and milk is heated to the soft ball stage and set aside to cool. When the mixture is lukewarm, flavorings (for instance, nuts, vanilla, or maple syrup) are added. The mixture is beaten until thick and poured into a pan. Penuche is cooled and cut into pieces before serving.

July 21 Junk Food Day

Each year on July 21st we observe Junk Food Day. “Junk food may be dangerous to your health.” This day is dedicated to the foods that everyone loves to snack on. Junk food by definition is usually high in fats, sugars, salt and calories and contains very little nutritional value. General public love junk food because they find it delicious. But it is unhealthy, and people who are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle generally try to avoid it. However, every now and then most of us have junk food cravings.

Grab a bag of buttery popcorn at the movies, order some fries at the drive-through, or make an ice cream sundae for dessert. Whatever you do, enjoy National Junk Food Day with at least one of your guilty pleasures

July 20 Moon Day

Moon Day is observed annually on July 20 and commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969. This event was reported by NASA as being “… the single greatest technological achievement of all time…”

James J. Mullaney, former Curator of Exhibits and Astronomy at Pittsburgh’s original Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science and Staff Astronomer at the Allegheny Observatory, says: “If there’s a Columbus Day on the calendar, there certainly should be a Moon Day!” Mr. Mullaney has been working toward making National Moon Day an official Federal holiday. Until that happens, National Moon Day will stay on our calendar as an “unofficial” National holiday.

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed the first humans, Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on the moon. Armstrong was the first to step onto the lunar surface, six hours after landing and spent two and a half hours outside the spacecraft. Aldrin spent slightly less time but together they collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins was the pilot of the spacecraft and remained alone in orbit until Armstrong and Aldrin returned.

Watched by millions, the event was broadcast on live TV to a world-wide audience and all witnessed as Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and described the event as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”

July 20 Lollipop Day

July 20 Lollipop Day is an annual observation of this popular and flavorful treat.Lollipops come in many colors, flavors and shapes. They range from the small size, which can be purchased by the bag full and are also given away at banks, barber shops and parades, to the very large ones that are made out of candy canes twisted into circles.

Lollipops usually consist of hardened sugar and corn syrup with added flavoring. They are mounted on a stick and intended for licking or sucking. Lollipops come in dozens of flavors, colors, and shapes. Sometimes they contain fillings, such as a soft candy or bubble gum.

Culinary historians believe that the lollipop (or at least some form of it) has been around since the prehistoric era. Early humans often enjoyed honey on a stick as a delicious treat. No one really knows how the modern-day lollipop was invented, but we do know how it got its name. George Smith, the owner of a small American candy store, came up with the sweet's name. In the early 1900s, he called the candy a "lollipop" after his favorite racehorse—LollyPop.

July 19 Daiquiri Day

Each year on July 19 Daiquiri Day celebrated. The daiquiri is a rum-based cocktail invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox. Legend has it that Cox created the first daiquiri in the early 1900s after he ran out of gin at a small bar in Santiago, Cuba.

Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients are rum, citrus juice (typically lime) and sugar.

American mining engineer, Jennings Cox, who was in Cuba at the time of the Spanish-American War, is credited as the inventor of the Daiquiri. The original drink was served in a tall glass which was packed with cracked ice. One teaspoon of sugar was sprinkled over the ice and then the juice of one or two fresh limes was squeezed over the sugar, followed by two to three ounces of white rum. It was at a later date that the Daiquiri evolved to be shaken in a shaker using the same ingredients substituting shaved ice.

There is a beach near Santiago, Cuba and an iron mine also in that area that are named Daiquiri. The drink is believed to be named after them.

July 18 Caviar Day

July 18th celebrates Caviar Day. Caviar is known as a seafood delicacy. Caviar is basically Sturgeon fish eggs. The United States was the leading distributor of caviar around the year 1900 producing over 600 tons a year. However, because of the vast amount of Sturgeon fish killed for the caviar, a ban was put in place to protect the Sturgeon fish from becoming extinct. Thus, resulting in expensive prices of caviar.

There are several species of Sturgeon fish. True caviar must come from sturgeon—a group of about 25 species of fish. Some examples of sturgeon are Beluga, Sterlet, Ossetia, and Sevruga. The caviar produced varies in colors based upon the species. Caviar is full of protein and vitamins making the delicacy a healthy meal.

Commercial caviar production historically involved stunning the fish and extracting the ovaries. Another method is extracting the caviar surgically which allows the females to continue producing roe but this method is very painful and stressful for the fish and is illegal in some countries.

Get Out of the Dog House Day is observed annually on the third Monday In July. Meet at a favorite coffee house. The purpose here is to start talking. Listen to what the other person has to say and do not be judgmental or defensive. Found out why you are “in the doghouse” and give suggestions on how to you can improve or fix the issue.

Send flowers, chocolates or an appropriate gift. Include a hand-written note about how you are committed to fixing the issue. Do this AFTER you have already spoken. You will win extra brownie points as this will be unexpected.

July 17 Peach Ice Cream Day.

July 17th is Peach Ice Cream Day. Peaches are a summer fruit, and Peach Ice Cream Day is a way to celebrate their goodness while enjoying a cooling delicious dessert. it makes perfect sense to celebrate Peach Ice Cream Day in July.

July 16 Corn Fritters Day

In a saucepan, heat oil to 375 °F. Drop mixture from table spoon into oil and fry until cooked through and golden. Drain in paper towels. Pour warm maple syrup on fritters before serving and enjoy your meal!
