September 16 Play-Doh Day

September 16 Play-Doh Day

Today day is September 16 Play-Doh Day, observed every year. Invented in the mid-1950s, it has entertained millions of children, and allowed them to express their creativity, both at home and in the classroom.

The invention was simple. A school teacher wanted a safe modeling clay for her pre-schoolers. She asked her brother-in-law Joseph McVicker, who worked at a chemical company, to come up with something. The result was simple....flour, water and food coloring.
Billion tubs of the enchanting putty have now been sold. If all that Play-Doh were rolled into a giant ball, it would weigh as much as 2000 Statues of Liberty. The range of colours now includes Paradise Purple, silver and gold. Some people like to keep the colours separate, but if you are being creative, your Play Doh may well end up the colour of mud.
Happy Play-Doh Day…

September 14 Eat a Hoagie Day

September 14 Eat a Hoagie Day

Today day is September 14 Eat a Hoagie Day observed every year.
The hoagie consists of meats, cheeses, vegetables, sauces and seasonings on a long roll of Italian or French bread.
The massive sandwiches were nicknamed “hoggies” because anyone eating them at one sitting would have to be a hog. The transformation of the word to “hoagie” is explained by the Philadelphia accent which often exaggerates vowel sounds.

One story claims that the Italian immigrants who worked at a shipyard called Hog Island during World War I would bring giant sandwiches for lunch. The workers were nicknamed "hoggies" so eventually the name was associated with the large sandwiches but the spelling evolved over time. There are several other stories, but they all give credit to Philly for the hoagie name.
Go and visit your favorite food point or shop and pick up and enjoy a hoagie.
