September 20 Punch Day

Today day is September 20 Punch Day observed each year for a wide assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, fall into the category of punch. Often made with a combination of fruit juice and a carbonated beverage, a punch is served at party’s weddings and other celebrations in large, wide bowls known as punch bowls.

In the early 1600s, sailors and employees of the British East India Company brought a new exotic drink from India to England. The beverage was made with five ingredients—spirits, lemon, sugar, water, and tea.
Punches are extremely common among parties for college and university students. These punches tend to be highly alcoholic and made with cheap ingredients. A number of beverage manufacturers produce punches, either as nonalcoholic mixers or as soft drinks. Hawaiian Punch and Hi-C are two of the better known brands in the US.
