Today day is September 17 Gymnastics Day – Third Saturday in September observed every year.
Gymnastics originated as an activity in ancient Greece. Gymnastics, this classical sport has been in existence since the 5th century B.C. The Greeks developed the practice to strengthen warrior’s skills for battle. Many of the events first exhibited during the Greek Olympics are a part of competition in the modern Olympics today. Today, gymnastics is a popular sport around the world.


The “father of modern gymnastics” is Friedrich Ludwig Jahn of Germany. In the 1700s he developed many of the events that leave the audiences gasping in awe such as the parallel bars, balance beam and jumping events.
Encourage the children and young adults in your life to consider gymnastics as a sport or play for physical suitability.
